Everyone piled into the van as Julian grabbed Madeline, who fought him every step of the way. Two more guards suddenly appeared at the back door with guns drawn, so Madeline seized the opportunity to jerk out of Julian's grasp then threw her hands into the air as she begged the guards not to shoot. The distraction allowed Julian the opportunity to jump into the driver's seat and speed away. Moments later, the guards pushed Madeline out of the way and opened fire on the van.[CLIP]
Moments later, two police officers walked in pushing a wheelchair as they announced that Sonny had been deemed well enough to return to Pentonville. Carly immediately objected and turned to Dante for help, but it was the first that Dante had heard of it. Carly was upset because she had hoped that Michael would have a chance to visit, so Dante admitted that he had talked to Michael but had failed to get through to his brother. Meanwhile, Michael exited the elevator and approached the nurses' station. He noticed a commotion down the hall as Sonny, wearing a Pentonville prison jumpsuit, was wheeled out of a hospital room with Carly and Dante trailing behind. Dante approached Michael while the police officers continued to the elevator with Sonny and Carly. Dante was glad Michael had made it, so Carly asked the police officers to give Sonny a minute with Michael. After the police officers stepped aside, Sonny confessed he had been told that Michael had helped save his life, but Michael insisted that Carly deserved most of the credit because she had refused to give up on Sonny. Michael continued that Sonny could have bribed the governor or had Shawn threaten the man. He wondered if Sonny had had the pardon "worked out" before he'd even pleaded guilty, and if the jailbreak had been staged. Carly begged Michael not to let his anger get the best of him. Michael vowed not to let Sonny get away with A.J.'s murder, and he stormed off. The Pentonville guard, who'd been given papers allowing Sonny's pardon, told Sonny that he was a "free man" and left.[CLIP]
